Bulls Hangin’ Tough

With the bearish seasonal headwinds this week, the bulls have done a nice job not giving up any ground so far. In fact, the bulls powered ahead on Tuesday and held firm on Wednesday. It certainly looks like the Dow and Nasdaq 100 want to join the S&P 500 at new highs this week. Although the S&P 400 and Russell 2000 have been laggards, they have certainly led the parade over the past week. The real news so far this […]   Read More

All-Time Highs in Sight

This is it. Put up or shut up time for the Dow and S&P 500. Both are positioned constructively to power to all-time highs over the next week. And I think they will. With sentiment mixed, it’s hard to believe that there will be any mass celebration of new highs, especially with the index problems I discussed here. In fact, I think there is very little chance that the three other major indices will confirm the Dow and S&P 500 […]   Read More

Major Indices Not Singing a Good Tune

2014 may be young, but so far, it’s exhibiting a very different character than 2013 with the rate of ascent completely flat lining and the high flying leaders hit very hard. In other words, the year has been digesting as I wrote about in the 2014 Fearless Forecast. Don’t get me wrong, just because I forecast this type of action doesn’t mean it has been an easy year to make money. It hasn’t. And I don’t think that changes just […]   Read More

Stocks Remain in Pullback Mode

With the major indices down 4-8% I am once again getting questions whether the bull market has ended and a multi-year decline is unfolding. I don’t think so.The New York Stock Exchange Cumulative Advance/Decline line recently scored an all time high. When bull markets end, we typically see this indicator peak months, quarters or even years before the Dow and S&P 500. The same can be said of the high yield bond sector. Bear markets are usually associated with restrictive […]   Read More

Routine & Healthy Consolidation in Play

Last Friday, we saw the S&P 500 tick at all time highs for a few seconds. That’s anything but unexpected and certainly not newsworthy. What was “different this time” was that it was the only major index to score new highs before they all reversed sharply to the downside. That made calling for an overall market pullback fairly easy. Over the past few days, the high flying, momentum driven tech stocks, like Google Netflix and Amazon have come under strong […]   Read More

Here We Go Again… Jobs Friday

Wasn’t it just yesterday that we were talking about the monthly employment report? Well, we’re here again! With back to back weak reports blamed on “weather”, stocks are set up to rally on a good report that gets past weather and a bad but not atrocious report that blames “weather”. It must be nice to have the “weather” fall back on. I may have to try that with clients. Credit a good quarterly report on our skills, but blame a […]   Read More

2014 Fearless Forecast

It’s really embarrassing that it’s been almost two months since I began speaking about my thoughts for 2014, yet I have been unable to mass distribute them. Shame on me! So far, to those folks who have read them, the comments and questions have been great. Keep them coming! Regular readers of Street$marts and this blog won’t be surprised at most of the forecast, but I did throw in a few new items. As always, I had a lot of […]   Read More

Fox Business TODAY @ 1:05 PM

I am going to be on Fox Business’ Markets Now at 1:05 PM EST today, February 4, discussing the stock market’s plunge from the perspective of someone who forecasted it a month ago. Yesterday’s collapse was very broad based with 94% of the volume on the downside. That’s the second 90%+ downside volume day of the decline and while a little late, confirmed that the stock market is in a corrective phase. Sentiment has come way off the overly bullish […]   Read More

Canaries Quiet

Thanks to my friend and business colleague/partner Dave Moenning (stateofthemarkets.com) for the canary pic. It’s been a while since I last updated this column, but it’s not because I am lazy! There simply haven’t been enough changes in the data to warrant an update. The rally through year-end was very powerful and almost all areas we in gear to the upside. And even today, while there may be a few warnings, we don’t have bull market ending conditions in place. […]   Read More

Goldman Sachs and the “Curious” Biotech Downgrade

I like to take things at face value. It’s makes life so much easier that way! But every once in a while, and probably more so in this business, some things just make you go “hmmmmmmmmm…”.  Two weeks ago, Goldman Sachs issued a very public call on the biotech sector. If it was almost anyone else, you would shrug your shoulders and move on. However, with Goldman, I sometimes take the “curious” stance, rightly or wrongly so. Goldman downgraded biotech […]   Read More
